A Netgate 7100-1U router protects your home network by blocking unwanted incoming internet connections and acting as a basic firewall. Sometimes you need to open a port in your router in order to get a good connection for a game or to use a specific device on your network. The 7100-1U lets you choose the applications that are allowed to connect through an open port. By opening a port in your router you allow a specific application or game to send data from the internet to your home network.

To open a port in your Netgate 7100-1U router, follow these important steps:

  1. Set up a static IP address on the device or computer you are forwarding these ports to.
  2. Log in to your Netgate 7100-1U router.
  3. Find the Port Forward section in your Netgate 7100-1U router.
    • Click on the Firewall tab at the top of the screen.
    • Click on NAT.
  4. Go ahead and create a Port Forward entry.

If this sounds difficult, you are not alone. We will walk you through each step in opening a port for the Netgate 7100-1U router.

Setup A Static IP Address

If you want to ensure that your ports remain open even after your device reboots, set up a static IP address in the device that you are opening a port for.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Login To Your Netgate Router

Log in to the Netgate 7100-1U router. To do this you need to use a web browser because the Netgate 7100-1U router uses what is called a web interface.

It normally doesn't matter what web browser you use so go ahead and open up your favorite. If you don't have a favorite then open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

If that is confusing to you, we have simplified this step with this link: Login to your 7100-1U Router

Once you have opened up a browser window, find the address bar. This is usually at the top of the page like the image below shows.

The Netgate 7100-1U router's default IP address is: 192.168.1.1

After typing your router's IP address into the address bar, make sure to click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box similar to the one shown below.

Create A Port Forward

Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

  • TCP Ports: 3074
  • UDP Ports: 3074

If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:

  1. Select WAN from the Interface drop-down box.

  2. Select IPv4 from the Address Family drop-down if this forward is for an IPv4 address, or select IPv6 if this is for an IPv6 address.

  3. Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.

  4. In the Destination port range section, select Other from both the From port and To port drop-down boxes.

  5. Still in the Destination port range section, Go ahead and enter the port number into the From port and the To port boxes, to forward a single port. To forward a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the From port box and then enter the highest number of that range into the To port box.

  6. Make the Single host selection in the Redirect target IP Type drop-down list.

  7. Go ahead and enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Redirect target IP Address box. It is possible for this to be either the IP address of your computer or of any other device on your network that you want ports forwarded to.

  8. Choose Other from the Redirect target port drop-down list.

  9. Take the same values that you entered into the Destination port range From port box, and enter them into the Redirect target port Custom box.

  10. Put a name for this forward in the Description box so that you can remember why you set this forward up. The name does not matter, so pick something that has meaning to you.

  11. Choose Add associated filter rule from the Filter rule association drop-down box.

  12. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page when you are completely finished to apply these changes.

Test Your Open Ports
