Have you been playing an online game with a massive amount of lag? Do you have an online program you use that keeps kicking you out? These are big signs that you may need to create a port forward on your Asus RT-AC55U router. Your router uses a firewall to block connections. It is a good thing your router does this because with out it your home network would be at a huge risk of being attacked from the Internet. A firewall works by blocking ports that it thinks you are not using. In order to tell the firewall that a certain port is needed you need to create a port forward on the router for a specific device on your home network.

In this guide we will be showing you how to port forward on the Asus RT-AC55U router. We will walk you through each of the following steps:

We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

NordVPN birthday deal!

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

Step 2

It is now time to login to the Asus RT-AC55U router. Your router uses a web interface which means you need to login using a web browser. It doesn't matter which browser you decide to use, simply pick your favorite. Some of the more common options are Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Edge.

Open up that web browser and find the address bar, normally at the top of the page like this:

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default Asus RT-AC55U IP Address is: 192.168.1.1

Of course if you have changed the router's IP address in the past then you need to enter that IP address instead of the default one. If you changed it and don't remember what you changed it to, follow the directions on this How To Find Your Router's IP Address page.

After you have entered the router's IP address into the address bar, click the Enter key on your computer keyboard. If all goes as it should take you to a login page like this:

On this login screen all you need to do is enter the router's username and password and then press the blue Sign in button.

Having Trouble?

There are a few things you can try if you can't get past this step:

  • First of all, if you have a different firmware version you could also have a different username and password. We recommend trying other Asus username and password combinations. Here is out list of Default Asus Router Passwords.
  • If you still can not access the router management pages, it is because you changed the username and password in the past and don't remember what you changed it to. Why not try guessing what you changed it to? We recommend using our Find Password App to help. Learn all about it on this Router Password Cracker page.
  • Finally if both the above ideas did not work it might be time to consider a factory reset. A reset like this one erases all personal settings. We strongly recommend that you exhaust all your other troubleshooting ideas before you decide to reset the Asus RT-AC55U router. Learn more on this How to Reset a Router page.

Step 3

It is time to find the port forwarding page in your router management pages. We will start on the Network Map like this:

On this page, find the WAN link in the left sidebar. Select this option then look to the top of the page and select the tab labeled Virtual Server/Port Forwarding.

  • TCP Ports: 3074
  • UDP Ports: 3074

If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:

Put a name for this forward in the Service Name box so that you can remember why you set this forward up. The name does not matter so pick something that has meaning to you.

Put the ports to forward into the Port Range box.

You can enter the ports as a list separated by commas, a range separated by hyphens, or a combination of both.

Enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to in the Local IP box. This is either the IP address of a computer or the IP address of another device on your network.

From the Protocol box select the protocol for the ports that you want to forward.

After you are done click the + button.

When you are finished, click the Apply button to save your changes.

Testing the Ports

It is always a good idea to check your work. This includes port forwarding. Sometimes the forwarding doesn't get done correctly for whatever reason.

Check to see if the ports were forwarded properly by using our Open Port Checker. It's easy to use and FREE when you get it as part of our trial version of the Network Utilities. Our Port Checker uses a local application to see if the server is listening on the ports you forwarded. This guarantees a verified answer to whether or not your ports are open or not.
