Your Cisco RVS4000 router has a firewall that helps protect your home network from malicious threats from the Internet. The firewall does this by blocking connections, but sometimes you need some of these connections open for a game or program to run smoother. The process of opening a port or connection is normally called a port forward because you are forwarding a port through the firewall directly to a device on your home network.

In this guide we will walk you through each and every one of the following steps:

We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.

Get Started Now!

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

NordVPN birthday deal!

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

Step 2

It is now time to login to the Cisco RVS4000 router. Your router uses a web interface which means you need to use a web browser to access your router settings. It doesn't matter which web browser you decide to use, simply pick your favorite. Some common options are: Internet Explorer, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

Once you have chosen the web browser, open it up and locate the address bar. This is normally at the top of the page like this:

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default Cisco RVS4000 IP Address is: 192.168.1.1

After entering the router's IP address, click the Enter key on your keyboard. This should get you a login screen like this:

Enter the router's username and password in order to access the router interface.

If you have changed your router's username and password in the past, then you need to enter those values in the boxes.

Having Trouble?

This is a common place to get stuck for several reasons. Here are some things you can try:

  • First, we recommend trying other common Cisco usernames and passwords. If you have a slightly different firmware version, it is possible you have a different username and password combination. Here is our list of Default Cisco Router Passwords.
  • If none of the other Cisco username/password combinations worked, it is because you changed the values at some point in the past. The next step is to try and guess what you changed it to. In order to help you with this we have the Find Password App that automates the process of trying thousands of different combinations for you. Learn more on our page titled Router Password Cracker.
  • If neither of the above options worked it may be time to start considering a factory reset for your router. This type of reset erases all your previously changed settings. Please be sure you exhaust other troubleshooting methods first. To learn how to reset a router, read this How to Reset a Router guide.

Step 3

Now we can start navigating to the port forwarding section of the Cisco RVS4000 router. We begin on the

On this page, use the left sidebar to choose the option of Firewall.

Now, if you want to port forward only one port, click the Single Port Forwarding option in the left sidebar under the Firewall heading.

If you want to forward a range of ports such as 77-96 then click the link in the left sidebar labeled Port Range Forwarding.

Step 4

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

  • TCP Ports: 3074
  • UDP Ports: 3074

If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:

Put a name for this forward in the Application box so that you can remember why you set this forward up. The name does not matter so pick something that has meaning to you.

If you are just forwarding a single port number then you can simply enter that same number into both the Start and the End boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, usually separated by a hyphen, then you need to enter the lowest number of that range into the Start box and then enter highest number into the End box.

In the Protocol box select the protocol that you want to forward these ports over.

Enter the IP address that you want to forward these ports to into the IP Address box. Note that if you are forwarding ports so you can run a program on a device other than your computer then you can enter your device's IP address into that box instead.

Enable the Enable checkbox by putting a check in it.

When you are finished, be sure to click the Save button in the lower left corner of the page.

Congratulations your ports should be forwarded.

Don't Forget to Test Your Ports

Your ports should be forwarded, but how do you really know? There is no big neon sign saying they forwarded correctly. In order to test if the ports forwarded properly we recommend using our Open Port Checker. It is completely FREE. You can get it in our trial version of the Network Utilities. Our port checker is better than others you find online because we use a local application to see if the server is listening. A lot of other port checkers on the Internet make assumptions about what programs you have installed on your device. Our port checker guarantees correct results.
