Open Ports on the Netgear C6300 Router

Your Netgear C6300 router has a firewall that helps protect your local network from malicious Internet threats. Your firewall does this by blocking connections to and from your network that are not authorized. When you play a game online or other application online and you experience lag, drops, etc... you should create a port forward for that particular application. You do this on your router. In this guide we will show you exactly how to create a port forward on your Netgear C6300 router.

We will walk you through each of the following steps:

How to setup a static IP address on the device you plan on forwarding these ports to.
How to login to the Netgear C6300 router.
How to navigate to the port forwarding section of the router.
How to create a port forward entry for your specific router.

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Use a VPN Instead

Step 2

In this step we will show you how to login to the Netgear C6300 router. Your router uses a web user interface. This means in order to login to the interface you need to open up a web browser. It doesn't really matter what browser you open up, just pick your favorite. Some of the more common options are Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Edge.

Once you have picked the web browser, open it up and find the address bar. It is normally at the top of the page, like this:

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default Netgear C6300 IP Address is: 192.168.0.1

After typing the router's IP address or default gateway into the address bar, simply press the Enter key on your keyboard. If everything goes according to plan you are then shown this page or box:

There should be two spaces. One for the username and the other for the password. This is not the WiFi password and username. These are the router interface username and password.

Unless you have changed them in the past, the default values are:

The Default Netgear C6300 Router Username is: admin
The Default Netgear C6300 Router Password is: password

Having Trouble?

If you have entered the above default values and they did not get you logged into the Netgear C6300 router, don't panic. Here are a few troubleshooting options to try:

First, it is possible you have a slightly different firmware version of this router. If this is the case the username and password could also be different. We recommend trying other Netgear default usernames and passwords. Here is our list of Default Netgear Router Passwords.

If the troubleshooting idea above didn't work it is because you have changed the username and password in the past and don't remember what you changed it to. Why not try guessing what you changed it to. Finally if you have tried both of the above options, it may be time to consider a factory reset. A reset like this one erases all personal changes you have ever made on the router. Step 3

You should now be logged into the Netgear C6300 router. It is time to find the port forwarding section of the web interface. To help you do this, start on the Basic Home page like this:

First, click the tab at the top of the screen labeled ADVANCED.

Next, click the option in the left sidebar labeled Advanced Setup.

Under that, a new menu appears. In this new menu click the option of Port Forwarding/Port Triggering

You should now see the page above. Look in the center section of the page and make sure the radio button labeled Port Forwarding is selected.

In the next little section choose the radio button of Always.

Then at the bottom of the page select the button labeled +Add Custom Service.

That takes you to the above page. This is where you create a port forward for the Netgear C6300 router.

Step 4

Enter the name of the program into the Service Name box. It doesn't really matter what you put into this box, but something that will remind you why these ports are being forwarded is be a good idea.

Use the Service Type dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding.

If you are just forwarding a single port number then you can simply enter that same number into both the External Starting Port and the External Ending Port boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, usually separated by a hyphen, then you need to enter the lowest number of that range into the External Starting Port box and then enter highest number into the External Ending Port box.

Make sure that the Use the same port range for Internal port checkbox is checked.

Enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to in the Internal IP Address box. This is either the IP address of a computer or the IP address of another device on your network.

Don't forget to click the green Apply button when you are finished with each port forward entry.

Test Your Ports

After you have finished creating the port forward you need to test them to see if they forwarded correctly. In order to do this we recommend using our FREE Open Port Checker.
