An important aspect of having a Netgear router on your home network is internet security. In general, routers block incoming internet connections and protect your network by only allowing the connections that you specifically set up. Sometimes it is necessary to unblock certain connections in your router or open a port in order to play a game or use an application. To help you get a better connection for gaming or using an application, you can open a port in your C6300BD and allow a direct connection.

The following steps will show you how to open ports on the Netgear C6300BD router:

  1. On the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to, you will need to set up a static IP address.

  3. Navigate to the Port Forwarding section in your Netgear C6300BD router.
    • Find the Advanced tab located near the top of the screen and click on it.

Step 1

If you want to ensure that your ports remain open even after your device reboots, set up a static IP address in the device that you are opening a port for.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2

The Netgear C6300BD router uses a web interface to display router settings. In order to login to the Netgear C6300BD router you need to use a web browser.

Open your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. If you are already in a browser window, go ahead and open up a new tab.

We have simplified this step for you with this link: Login to your C6300BD Router

Find the address bar in your browser window. This is usually found at the top of the page, like in the image below.

Step 4

Make sure that you must open a port in your router before doing so since this will allow data to come through the firewall portion of your router to a specific device. It is possible that this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. However, don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it because the risk is very low.

  1. Make sure there's a dot in the Port Forwarding radio button, then click the button called Add Custom Service.

  2. Create a name for this forward and type it into the Service Name box. Since the name does not have an effect on the functionality of the forward, choose a name that will help you remember why the forward was created.

  3. Use the Service Type dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.

  4. Go ahead and enter the port number into the External Starting Port and the External Ending Port boxes, to forward a single port. To forward a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the External Starting Port box and then enter the highest number of that range into the External Ending Port box.

  5. Put a check in the box labeled Use the same port range for Internal port.

  6. Enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Internal IP Address box. It is possible to forward a port to the IP address of your computer or to the IP address of a specific device on your internal network.

  7. Make the Any selection in the External IP Address drop-down list.

  8. To apply these changes, remember to click the Apply button at the top of the page when you are completely finished.
