A Netgear DGN2200v3 router contains a basic firewall to help protect your home network. A Firewall blocks incoming connections by nature. Sometimes you need to unblock some of these connections so you can run a game or application. This is called opening a port or port forwarding. Port forwarding is literally forwarding a port from the internet to your home network.

You need to follow the steps below to open ports in your Netgear DGN2200v3 router:

  1. Set up a static IP address on the device or computer you are forwarding these ports to.
  2. Go ahead and log in to your Netgear DGN2200v3 router.
  3. In your Netgear DGN2200v3 router, navigate to the Firewall Rules section.
    • Click the Firewall Rules link at the left of the screen.
  4. Create a Custom Service entry.
  5. Navigate to the Port Forwarding / Port Triggering section in your Netgear DGN2200v3 router.
    • Click the Port Forwarding / Port Triggering link, which is at the left of the screen.
  6. Create a Port Forwarding entry.

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1

It is important to set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports remain forwarded even after a reboot, power outage, or another type of device or router disconnect.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2

In order to login to the Netgear DGN2200v3 router you need to use a web browser. The Netgear DGN2200v3 router uses what is called a web interface where you can access and control router settings.

Go ahead and open up your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

If this step is confusing, we have simplified it for you with this link: Login to your DGN2200v3 Router

Find the address bar once you have opened up a web browser. This is usually located at the top of the page, like in the image below.

The default IP address for the Netgear DGN2200v3 router is: 192.168.0.1

Once you have entered your router's IP address in the address bar go ahead and click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box like the one shown below.

Step 4

Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.

  1. In the Name box, type in a name for this forward. This will serve as a reminder to you in the future as to why this forward was set up, so give it a name that makes sense to you.

  2. Use the Type dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.

  3. Enter the port number into the Start Port and the End Port boxes to forward a single port. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the Start Port box and then enter the highest number of that range into the End Port box.

  4. Click the Apply button at the bottom of the page when you are completely finished to apply these changes.

Step 5

Now you need to assign your custom service to a device, completing the port forward. This is done in the Port Forwarding section of the router.

You should now be on a page called Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.
