This Netgear R8300 router uses a firewall to help protect your home network from unwanted Internet access. The firewall does this by actively blocking all incoming and outgoing connections that have not been authorized. If you are playing an online game or using an online program that lags or kicks you out, you may benefit from unblocking some blocked connections. This process of unblocking or opening ports is normally called a port forward.

Use this guide to help you get ports forwarded for your Netgear R8300 router. We will walk you through each of the following steps:

We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

NordVPN birthday deal!

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

Step 2

After setting up a static IP address, it is time to login to the Netgear R8300 router. In order to login to this router you need to open a web browser because it uses a web interface. It does not matter what browser you decide to use. Pick one you are comfortable with. If you are unsure here are some examples: Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Edge.

Once you have opened the web browser, find the address bar. This is typically at the top of the page like this:

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default Netgear R8300 IP Address is: 192.168.1.1

After typing the correct IP address into the address bar, you are given an authentication page like this:

All you have to do is enter the username and password for the Netgear R8300 router and click the OK or Login button.

Having Trouble?

This is a common place to get stuck. Here are a few things you can try:

  • First, try some other Netgear usernames and passwords. If you have a different firmware version, you might also have a different username and password. Here is our list of Default Netgear Router Passwords.
  • Second, we recommend trying to guess what the password might be. You must have forgotten what you changed the username and password to when you setup the router. If you need a bit of help, check out our Find Password App. This app allows you to automate the guessing process. Learn more about it on the Router Password Cracker page.
  • Finally if you are still stuck, you may want to do a factory reset. A factory reset erases every single setting you have ever changed in the lifetime of this router. We strongly recommend you exhaust your other options first. Learn how to reset a router in this How to Reset a Router guide.

Step 3

It is now time to find the port forwarding section of the Netgear R8300 router. We begin on the Basic Home page of the router:

On this first page, click the tab at the top of the page labeled ADVANCED.

Make up a name to put in the Service Name box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward, it's simply there so you can know why it was created.

In the Service Type box select the protocol that you want to forward these ports over.

If you are just forwarding a single port number then you can simply enter that same number into both the External Starting Port and the External Ending Port boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, usually separated by a hyphen, then you need to enter the lowest number of that range into the External Starting Port box and then enter highest number into the External Ending Port box.

Enable the Use the same port range for Internal port checkbox by putting a check in it.

Enter the IP address that you want to forward these ports to into the Internal IP Address box. Note that if you are forwarding ports so you can run a program on a device other than your computer then you can enter your device's IP address into that box instead.

Check Your Ports

After you have finished port forwarding, it is a good idea to check and see if they forwarded correctly. We have an Open Port Checker you can use. It is free and part of our Network Utilities. This Open Port Checking tool uses a local application to see if the server is listening on those ports. This gives you an accurate answer. Go ahead and give it a try.
