Your Smart Modem Gen 2 router helps to protect your network by blocking incoming internet connections. This is an important feature that helps you to control which applications have access to your network. Sometimes you want to allow network access to a specific application in order to play a game, connect a device, or use an app. The Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 can unblock certain incoming connections through port forwarding or by opening a port. You can open ports in your Smart Modem Gen 2 by assigning specific ports to an IP address. Forwarding these ports directs incoming data to a specific device or application.
Follow the steps below to open ports in your Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 router:
- Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
- Log in to your Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 router.
- Make your way to the Port Forwarding section of the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 router.
- Click on the Go To Advanced button at the right of the screen.
- Find the Firewall button located near the middle of the screen and click on it.
- Click the Port Forwarding tab, which is at the middle of the screen.
- Create a Port Forwarding entry.

Step 1 - Setup A Static IP Address

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Step 2 - Login To Your Telstra Router
Log in to the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 router. To do this you need to use a web browser because the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 router uses what is called a web interface.
It normally doesn't matter what web browser you use so go ahead and open up your favorite. If you don't have a favorite then open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Once you have opened up a browser window, find the address bar. This is usually at the top of the page like the image below shows.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 router's default IP address is: 192.168.0.1
Once you have finished entering your router's IP address into the address bar, click the enter button on your keyboard. A box similar to the one below should appear.
To login, enter the username and password for the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2s. Important Note: If you have changed them in the past, you need to enter in those values.
- The default Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 Router Username is: admin
- The default Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 Router Password is: Telstra
Once you enter your username and password, click the Sign In button.

After resetting the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 router your username and password are reverted back to factory defaults. Router settings may also change when you reset, so make a note of your current router settings before you reset.
Step 3 - Find The Port Forwarding Section
You should be on the home page of your Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 router once you have successfully logged in. Find the Port Forwarding section of your router.
- Click on the Go To Advanced button at the right of the screen.
- Click the Firewall button at the middle of the screen.
- Find the Port Forwarding tab at the middle of the screen and click on it.
You should now be on a page that says Port Forwarding.
Step 4 - Create A Port Forward Entry
Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
- TCP Ports: 3074
- UDP Ports: 3074

- There is a check box before the name box that you need to check.
- Make up a name to put in the Name box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward; it's simply there so you can know why it was created.
- Select the protocol type of the ports that you are forwarding from the Protocol dropdown box. If your router has the option of Both, then go ahead and select that. Otherwise, select either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP, but your router does not have Both, then you will need to create two entries.
- You can enter either a single number or a range of numbers in the WAN port box. If you are forwarding a single port number, you can enter it into the WAN port box. To forward a range of ports, you can enter the lowest number of that range into the WAN port box, followed by a hyphen, followed by the largest number. An example would look like this: 1000-2000.
- Take the same values that you entered into the WAN port box, and enter them into the LAN Port box.
- Go ahead and enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Destination IP box. It is possible for this to be either the IP address of your computer or of any other device on your network that you want ports forwarded to.
- Click on the Plus button at the right of the screen.
