Forwarding Ports in a TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 Router

Your TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router protects your home network by limiting incoming connections from the internet. Sometimes it is necessary to unblock some of those connections like when you want to create a direct connection for gaming, use a specific application, or set up a new device on your network. This process is called forwarding or opening a port. In your TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router you many need to open a port, which means assigning a port number or set of port numbers to a specific IP address. This routes the incoming data to the correct device on your network.

You need to follow the steps below to open ports in your TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router:

1. Set up a static IP address on the device or computer you are forwarding these ports to.
2. Log in to your TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router.
3. In your TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router, navigate to the Virtual Server section.
   • Find the Forwarding tab at the left of the screen and click it.
   • Click Virtual Server.
4. Go ahead and create a Virtual Server entry.

Step 1 - Setup A Static IP Address

If you want to ensure that your ports remain open even after your device reboots, set up a static IP address in the device that you are opening a port for.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2 - Login To Your TP-Link Router

In order to login to the TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router you need to use a web browser. The TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router uses what is called a web interface where you can access and control router settings.

Go ahead and open up your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Find the address bar once you have opened up a web browser. This is usually located at the top of the page, like in the image below.

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.

The TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router's default IP address is: 192.168.0.1

Enter your router's IP address into the address bar of your browser and click the enter button on your keyboard. A box like the one below should appear.

To login, enter the username and password for the TP-Link TL-WR840N v3s. Important Note: If you have changed them in the past, you need to enter in those values.

Once you enter your username and password, click the Login button.

Step 3 - Find The Port Forwarding Section

You should be on the home page of your TP-Link TL-WR840N v3 router once you have successfully logged in. Find the Virtual Server section of your router.

• Click on the Forwarding tab at the left of the screen.
• Click Virtual Server.

You should now be on a page that says Virtual Server.

Step 4 - Create A Port Forward Entry

Make sure that you must open a port in your router before doing so since this will allow data to come through the firewall portion of your router to a specific device. It is possible that this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. However, don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it because the risk is very low.

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

• TCP Ports: 3074
• UDP Ports: 3074

1. Click on the button called Add New.

2. If you are forwarding a single port number, enter it into the Service Port box. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the Service Port box, followed by a hyphen followed by the largest number. For example, a range of port numbers might look like this: 1000-2000.

3. Leave Internal Port blank.

4. Find the IP Address box and enter the IP address that you want ports forwarded to. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address for devices on your network that you want to forward ports for.

5. Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.

6. Make the Enabled selection in the Status drop-down list.

7. Remember to click the Save button at the bottom of the page to apply these changes when you are completely finished.
