Simple BT Smart Hub 2 Router Port Forwarding Instructions

A BT Smart Hub 2 router contains a basic firewall to help protect your home network. A Firewall blocks incoming connections by nature. Sometimes you need to unblock some of these connections so you can run a game or application. This is called opening a port or port forwarding. Port forwarding is literally forwarding a port from the internet to your home network.

To open a port in your BT Smart Hub 2 router, follow these important steps:

1. Set up a static IP address on the device or computer you are forwarding these ports to.
2. Log in to your BT Smart Hub 2 router.
3. Navigate to the Port Forwarding section in your BT Smart Hub 2 router.
   • Find the Advanced Settings button located near the bottom right of the screen and click it.
   • Click on the Firewall button at the middle of the screen.
4. Go ahead and create a Port Forwarding entry.

Step 1 - Setup A Static IP Address

Set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This is an important step that keeps your ports open even after a reboot, power outage, or another type of device or router disconnect.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2 - Login To Your BT Router

Log in to your BT Smart Hub 2 router. To log in you will need to use a web browser since the BT Smart Hub 2 uses a web interface to access router configurations.

Open up whichever internet browser that you are comfortable with. If you are not sure which one to use, then go ahead and open Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Once you have opened a web browser, find the address bar which is usually located at the top of the screen. The image below shows an example of this.

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.

The BT Smart Hub 2 router's default IP address is: 192.168.1.254

After typing your router's IP address into the address bar, make sure to click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box similar to the one shown below.

Enter the username and password for your BT Smart Hub 2 router. Note: If you have changed these numbers in the past, you will need to enter in the those values.

Once you have entered your username and password, remember to click the OK button to login to your BT Smart Hub 2 router.

If you are unable to log in even after trying the above list of passwords you may need to consider a reset for your router. Our guide How to Reset a Router can help you with that. After resetting the BT Smart Hub 2 router your username and password will be reverted back to factory defaults.

Step 3 - Find The Port Forwarding Section

You should be on the home page of your BT Smart Hub 2 router once you have successfully logged in. Find the Port Forwarding section of your router.

• Click on the Advanced Settings button at the bottom right of the screen.
• Find the Firewall button at the middle of the screen and click on it.

You are now on the Port Forwarding page.

Step 4 - Create A Port Forward Entry

To create an entry, click on the button called Create a new port forwarding rule.

Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

• TCP Ports: 3074
• UDP Ports: 3074

1. Make up a name to put in the Rule Name box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward; it's simply there so you can know why it was created.

2. Click on the button that says Show IP Address.

   • Click on Enter IP Address.
   • In the Set the IP Address box, enter the IP address that you want ports forwarded to. This may be the IP address of your computer or the IP address of another device on your network that you want to forward ports to.
   • Click on the Set button.

3. If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into the External Ports Start and the External Ports End boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the External Ports Start box. Then enter the highest number of that range into the External Ports End box.

4. Take the same values that you entered into the External Ports box, and enter them into the Internal Ports box.

5. In the Protocol dropdown box, select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. Choose Both if your router has that option. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have the Both option, then you need to create two entries.

6. To add the forward, find the Add icon located near the right of the screen and click on it.

7. Click the Save button at the top of the page to apply these changes when you are completely finished.
