Easiest Way to Forward Ports on the Cisco Linksys E1000 Router

In this guide we show you how to port forward on the Cisco Linksys E1000 router. This router has a firewall that protects your home network from unwanted Internet access. This firewall blocks connections you may want opened for a game or application. The process of opening one of these blocked ports is typically called a port forward since you are forwarding a port from the Internet directly to a device on your network.

We will walk you through each of the steps involved in forwarding a port for your Cisco Linksys E1000 router.

We will show you how to:

Setup a static IP address on whatever device or game console you want to forward these ports to.
Login to your Cisco Linksys E1000 router.
Navigate to the port forwarding section.
- Click the Applications & Gaming link.
- Click the Port Range Forwarding or the Single Port Forwarding button to forward ports.
Enter the appropriate data to create a port forward entry.

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Step 2

It is now time to login to the Cisco Linksys E1000 router. To do this you need to open up your favorite web browser because this Cisco Linksys E1000 router uses a web interface to make setting changes.

Some common web browsers are:

After you have opened up a web browser, find the address bar. This is normally at the top of the page.

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default Cisco Linksys E1000 IP Address is: 192.168.1.1

After entering the router's IP address, hit the Enter key and you should see the following image:

You are in the right place if you see a box asking for a username and password.

The Default Cisco Linksys E1000 Router Password is: admin

After entering the username and password click the OK button to access the Cisco Linksys E1000 router interface pages.

Having Trouble?

If you having trouble at this point there are several things you can try:

First, why not give other Default Cisco Linksys Router Passwords a try. Every once in a while a firmware upgrade changes the username and password so a different Cisco password could work.

If you are still stuck after trying both of the previous troubleshooting options, you may need to consider a router reset. A reset like this is not recommended unless you have tried other options first. A reset like this one erases all settings and returns them to factory defaults. Step 3

It is now time to find the port forwarding section of the router. To do that let us start on the Basic Setup page of the Cisco Linksys E1000 router.

First, click the Applications & Gaming link at the top of the page.

This particular router has two different sections to forward ports. The first section allows you to forward a single port and the other allows you to forward a range of ports. If you are forwarding a single port, click the option of Single Port Forwarding at the top of the page in blue. If you are forwarding a range of ports, click the option at the top of the page labeled Port Range Forwarding.

Step 4

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

TCP Ports: 3074

UDP Ports: 3074

Forwarding a Single Port

Enter the name of the program into the Application Name box. It doesn't really matter what you put into this box, but something that will remind you why these ports are being forwarded is be a good idea.

Enter the same port number to be forwarded into both the External Port and the Internal Port boxes.

Select the required protocol for these ports from the Protocol dropdown box.

Enter the IP address that you want to forward these ports to into the To IP Address box. Note that if you are forwarding ports so you can run a program on a device other than your computer then you can enter your device's IP address into that box instead.

Enable the Enabled checkbox by putting a check in it.

Forwarding a Port Range

Make up a name to put in the Application Name box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward, it's simply there so you can know why it was created.

If you are only forwarding a single port number then enter that number into both the Start Port and the End Port boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports separated by a hyphen then enter the lowest number of that range into the Start Port box and the highest number of that range into the End Port box.

Select the required protocol for these ports from the Protocol dropdown box.

Verify that you have the Enabled checkbox checked.

Once you have finished, click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page.

Test Your Ports

Finally, it is a very good idea to check to see if the ports were forwarded correctly.
