Your Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router protects your home network by limiting incoming connections from the internet. Sometimes it is necessary to unblock some of those connections like when you want to create a direct connection for gaming, use a specific application, or set up a new device on your network. This process is called forwarding or opening a port. In your Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router you many need to open a port, which means assigning a port number or set of port numbers to a specific IP address. This routes the incoming data to the correct device on your network.
Follow the steps below to open ports in your Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router:
- Go ahead and set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding these ports to.
- Log in to your Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router.
- Make your way to the Port Mapping section of the Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router.
- Find the Forward Rules tab located near the top of the screen and click it.

Once you have opened a web browser, find the address bar which is usually located at the top of the screen. The image below shows an example of this.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router's default IP address is: 192.168.100.1
Enter your router's IP address into the address bar of your browser and click the enter button on your keyboard. A box like the one below should appear.
Enter the username and password for your Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router. Note: If you have changed these numbers in the past, you will need to enter in the those values.
- The default Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 Router Username is: root

Huawei Usernames and Passwords
If the username and password did not work I recommend checking out our Default Huawei Router Passwords page.
If, after trying the above list of passwords you still can't login you may need to consider a reset for your router. Learn how to do that by reading our How to Reset a Router guide. After resetting the Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router your username and password are reverted back to factory defaults.
Step 3
After successfully logging in to your Huawei EchoLife HG8245Q2 router you should see the router's home page on your screen. Find the Port Mapping section of your router.
- Click the Forward Rules tab, which is at the top of the screen.
- Click on the Port Mapping Configuration tab, which is at the left of the screen.
You are now on the Port Mapping Configuration page.
Step 4
Make sure that you must open a port in your router before doing so since this will allow data to come through the firewall portion of your router to a specific device. It is possible that this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. However, don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it because the risk is very low.

-
To start adding an entry, click on the button labeled New.
-
Click the radio button labeled User-defined.
-
Put a check in the box marked Enable Port Mapping.
-
Type in a name for this forward in the Mapping Name box. Choose a name that will help you remember why this forward was set up since it does not affect the functionality of the forward.
-
Select your internet connection from the WAN Name menu. If you have more than one option here and aren't sure which is correct, you might want to try checking WAN Information page in the Status section of your router.
-
You need to enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Internal Host box. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to. Or if it's listed, you can select it from the list.
- You can leave External Source IP Address blank.
-
Now you'll want to add some port information. To do that, click the button that says Add.
-
Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.
-
Enter the port number into the left Internal Port Number and the right Internal Port Number boxes to forward a single port. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the left Internal Port Number box and then enter the highest number of that range into the right Internal Port Number box.
- The External Port Number and External Source Port Number boxes can be left blank. The router will use the same information you entered in to the Internal Port Number boxes by default.
-
Click the Apply button at the bottom of the page when you are completely finished to apply these changes.
