Did you know your Huawei Vodafone HG659 router has a firewall? The firewall helps protect your home network from unwanted Internet access. The firewall blocks all unauthorized ports or connections to your home network. Some online games and programs will run much smoother if you have additional ports opened. This process of opening additional ports is called a port forward.

In this guide I will show you exactly how to forward ports on the Huawei Vodafone HG659 router. I will explain how to:

We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

NordVPN faster than ever deal!

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

TIP: I recommend writing this static IP address down. You need it a little later in the port forwarding process.

Step 2

It is now time to login to the Huawei Vodafone HG659 router. First, you need to open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. It normally does not matter which browser you decide to open, simply pick the one you are most comfortable with.

Once you have opened up the web browser of your choice, find the address bar at the top of the page. The address bar looks like this:

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default Huawei Vodafone HG659 IP address is: 192.168.1.1

Press the Enter key on your keyboard after entering the router's IP address in the address bar. If all goes as it should you will see a login screen similar to this:

Huawei HG659 default login.

If you don't see a login screen, you need to find out what the current IP address is. This can be done by following the directions on my How To Find Your Router's IP Address page.

Go ahead and enter the username and password to gain access to the router interface.

After entering the username and password click the OK button to login to the Huawei Vodafone HG659 router.

Having Trouble?

A lot of people get stuck at this point. Most router setup procedures ask you to change the username and password before continuing. These passwords get lost, and logging into the router interface becomes a challenge. Here are a few things you can try before tossing the router out the nearest window:

  • It is possible we don't have the most current default username and password. Every once in a while router manufactures change the defaults on us to keep us on our toes. Here is a list of all the different default usernames and passwords Huawei has ever used: Default Huawei Router Passwords.
  • None of the defaults worked? Most likely you changed the password and have forgotten it. If you can't guess what you changed it to, let us help. Use our Find Password App. It does the guessing for you.
  • Are you still stuck? It is probably time to consider a factory reset for your Huawei Vodafone HG659 router. To do this follow the procedure explained on our How to Reset a Router page.

Step 3

You should now be logged in and looking at the Home page of the Huawei Vodafone HG659 router interface. It will look like this:

Huawei HG659 Home
Huawei HG659 Home.

First, click the option of Internet at the top of the page.

Huawei HG659 Internet Settings
Huawei HG659 Internet Settings.

This opens a group of links in the left sidebar. Select the option in this group labeled Forwarding.

Click the New Port Mapping link near the center of the page.

Click the Add Port Mapping Application link near the center of the page.

Near the bottom of the page click the New link.

Put a name for this forward in the Name box so that you can remember why you set this forward up. The name does not matter so pick something that has meaning to you.

If you are forwarding a range of ports then you need to enter the lowest number of that range into the left hand External Port and Internal Port boxes and the highest number of that range into the right hand External Port and Internal Port boxes.

If you are forwarding a single port then you can enter that same port number into both of the External Port and both of the Internal Port boxes.

Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding.

When you are all done click the Save button.

Enter the name of the program into the Mapping Name box. It doesn't really matter what you put into this box, but something that will remind you why these ports are being forwarded is be a good idea.

In the Application dropdown box select the service you created.

In the Internal Host box to choose a device to forward ports to. This box contains a list of device names that are visible on your network.

Click the Save button when you are finished.

Check your Ports

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if the ports forwarded properly, so we recommend using our Open Port Checker to see if the ports forwarded correctly. Our port checker uses a local application to see if the server is listening. This guarantees an accurate result.
