An important aspect of having a Netcomm router on your home network is internet security. In general, routers block incoming internet connections and protect your network by only allowing the connections that you specifically set up. Sometimes it is necessary to unblock certain connections in your router or open a port in order to play a game or use an application. To help you get a better connection for gaming or using an application, you can open a port in your NF18ACV and allow a direct connection.
The following steps will show you how to open ports on the Netcomm NF18ACV router:
- On the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to, you will need to set up a static IP address.
- Log in to your Netcomm NF18ACV router.
- In your Netcomm NF18ACV router, navigate to the Virtual Servers section.
- Click on the Advanced Setup link at the left of the screen.
- Click on the NAT link.
- Click on the link that says Virtual Servers.
- Create a Virtual Servers entry.
The process of opening ports in your Netcomm NF18ACV router may seem daunting. Remember, however, that you are not alone and do not have to feel discouraged. Let us walk you through the steps for opening ports in your router. Let's get this figured out!

Step 1 - Setup A Static IP Address
If you want to ensure that your ports remain open even after your device reboots, set up a static IP address in the device that you are opening a port for.

Or follow our Static IP Address guides to setup a static IP address.
After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Step 2 - Login To Your Netcomm Router
Log in to the Netcomm NF18ACV router. To do this you need to use a web browser because the Netcomm NF18ACV router uses what is called a web interface.
It normally doesn't matter what web browser you use so go ahead and open up your favorite. If you don't have a favorite then open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
If that is confusing to you, we have simplified this step with this link: Login to your NF18ACV Router
Once you have opened up a browser window, find the address bar. This is usually at the top of the page like the image below shows.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The Netcomm NF18ACV router's default IP address is: 192.168.20.1
Once you have finished entering your router's IP address into the address bar, click the enter button on your keyboard. A box similar to the one below should appear.
To login, enter the username and password for the Netcomm NF18ACVs. Important Note: If you have changed them in the past, you need to enter in those values.
- The default Netcomm NF18ACV Router Username is: admin
- The default Netcomm NF18ACV Router Password is: password
Once you enter your username and password, click the Log In button.
Netcomm Usernames and Passwords
If the username and password did not work, go to our Default Netcomm Router Passwords page for help.
If, after trying the above list of passwords you still can't log in you may need to consider a reset for your router. Learn how to do that by reading our How to Reset a Router guide. **Note:**After resetting the Netcomm NF18ACV router your username and password revert back to factory defaults.
Step 3 - Find The Port Forwarding Section
You should be on your routers home page once you complete logging in. Find the Virtual Servers section on the home page of the Netcomm NF18ACV router.
- Click the Advanced Setup link at the left of the screen.
- Click the NAT link.
- Click the link that says Virtual Servers.
You should now be on a page that says Virtual Servers.
Step 4 - Create A Port Forward Entry
Make sure that you must open a port in your router before doing so since this will allow data to come through the firewall portion of your router to a specific device. It is possible that this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. However, don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it because the risk is very low.

-
Find the Add button located near the center of the screen and click it.
-
Select your internet connection from the Use Interface drop-down box.
-
Select Custom Service.
-
Make up a name to put in the Custom Service box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward; it's simply there so you can know why it was created.
-
Put a check in the box named Enable LAN Loopback.
-
Enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Server IP Address box. It is possible to forward a port to the IP address of your computer or to the IP address of a specific device on your internal network.
-
Make the Enable selection in the Status drop-down list.
-
Go ahead and enter the port number into the External Port Start and the External Port End boxes, to forward a single port. To forward a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the External Port Start box and then enter the highest number of that range into the External Port End box.
-
In the Protocol dropdown box, select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. Choose Both if your router has that option. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have the Both option, then you need to create two entries.
-
In the Internal Port Start box, enter the same values that you entered into the External Port Start box.
-
Remember to click the Apply/Save button at the bottom of the page to apply these changes when you are completely finished.
Test Your Ports To See If They Are Open
Use our Network Utilities software, (which includes a free Open Port Checker tool) to test your network to see if you have forwarded ports in the Netcomm NF18ACV router correctly. Open Port Checker is the only online port checking tool that has Guaranteed Results.
