Did you know your Netgear DGN2200 router includes a basic firewall designed to help your home network from unwanted access coming from the Internet? This firewall blocks connections which sometimes need to be opened in order for a game or application to run more smoothly. This process of opening a connection or port is called a port forward because you are literally forwarding a port through the firewall and directing it at a device on your network.

The basic process involved in opening a port is:

  1. Setting up a Static IP Address on the device or game console you want to forward these ports to.
  2. Next you need to Login to the Netgear DGN2200 router.
  3. Then you find your way to the port forwarding section of the device
    • Click the Port Forwarding / Port Triggering link.
    • Click the Port Forwarding radio button.
    • Click the Add Custom Service button.
  4. Finally you create a port forward rule or entry.

Don't panic if all this sounds difficult at first. We will be walking you through each and every step in the process to get your ports opened on the Netgear DGN2200 router.

We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

NordVPN faster than ever deal!

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

Step 2

It is time to login to the Netgear DGN2200 router. This router utilizes a web interface, meaning you need to login using a web browser. It doesn't matter what browser you choose to use, just pick a favorite. Some of the more common web browsers include Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer, and Safari.

After picking a web browser and opening it, look for the address bar. It is normally at the top of the page and looks like this:

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default Netgear DGN2200 IP Address is: 192.168.0.1 After entering in the router's IP Address simply press the Enter key on your keyboard. If all goes well you end up on this page:

You are on the right page if you see a box prompting you for a username and password.

Go ahead and enter the username and password. Then click the OK button to login to your Netgear DGN2200 router.

Having Trouble Logging In?

If the username and password don't work we recommend trying other Netgear usernames and passwords before doing anything drastic. Find a full list of those passwords on this Default Netgear Router Passwords page.

If you are still unable to login to the Netgear DGN2200 router you can try our Find Password App. This app helps you crack a password on your home network.

Finally, if you are still not able to login to the router it may be time to consider a reset. A reset like this erases all settings you have ever changed in the past including the username and password. Learn more in our How to Reset a Router guide.

Enter the name of the program into the Service Name box. It doesn't really matter what you put into this box, but something that will remind you why these ports are being forwarded is be a good idea.

The protocol that you want to forward is selected from the Service Type box.

If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into the Starting Port and the Ending Port boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the Starting Port box. Then enter the highest number of that range into the Ending Port box.

Enter the IP address that you want to forward these ports to into the Server IP Address box. Note that if you are forwarding ports so you can run a program on a device other than your computer then you can enter your device's IP address into that box instead.

When you are finished, click the Apply button.

Don't forget to click the Apply button after each entry in order to save these changes.

Your ports should now be open. It is time to test them.

Test if Your Ports are Open

After you have finished the port forwarding process we recommend you test them to see if they forwarded correctly. To do this we recommend using our Free How To Check For Open Ports. This Open Port Checker can be found in our Network Utilities tool.
