Netgear Nighthawk R7000P Router Port Forwarding Instructions

A Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router contains a basic firewall to help protect your home network. A Firewall blocks incoming connections by nature. Sometimes you need to unblock some of these connections so you can run a game or application. This is called opening a port or port forwarding. Port forwarding is literally forwarding a port from the internet to your home network.

In order to open ports in your Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router, you need to:

1. Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
2. Go ahead and log in to your Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router.
3. In your Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router, navigate to the Port Forwarding section.
   • Find the Advanced tab located near the top of the screen and click on it.
   • Click on the Advanced Setup tab at the left of the screen.
   • Click on Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.
4. Go ahead and create a Port Forwarding entry.

Setup A Static IP Address

It is important to set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports remain forwarded even after a reboot, power outage, or another type of device or router disconnect.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Login To Your Netgear Router

Log in to your Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router. To log in you will need to use a web browser since the Netgear Nighthawk R7000P uses a web interface to access router configurations.

Open up whichever internet browser that you are comfortable with. If you are not sure which one to use, then go ahead and open Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Once you have opened a web browser, find the address bar which is usually located at the top of the screen. The image below shows an example of this.

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.

The default IP address for the Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router is: 192.168.1.1

Once you have entered your router's IP address in the address bar go ahead and click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box like the one shown below.

Enter the username and password for your Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router. Note: If you have changed these numbers in the past, you will need to enter in the those values.

Once you have entered your username and password, remember to click the Log In button to login to your Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router.

Find the Port Forwarding Section

You should be on your routers home page once you complete logging in. Find the Port Forwarding section on the home page of the Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router.

• Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the screen.
• Click on the Advanced Setup tab at the left of the screen.
• Click Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.

You should now be on a page that says Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.

Create A Port Forward

Forwarding ports in your router creates a path that allows data to get through your network firewall, and this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. So make sure that you must forward a port before actually doing so. However, the risk is very low, so do not let this warning stop you from making this change if you need to.

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

• TCP Ports: 3074
• UDP Ports: 3074

1. Make sure there's a dot next to Port Forwarding, then click on the button labeled Add Custom Service.

2. Type in a name for this forward in the Service Name box. Choose a name that will help you remember why this forward was set up since it does not affect the functionality of the forward.

3. Select the protocol type of the ports that you are forwarding from the Protocol dropdown box. If your router has the option of Both, then go ahead and select that. Otherwise, select either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP, but your router does not have Both, then you will need to create two entries.

4. Enter the ports you want to forward in to the External port range box. You can enter a single port (eg. 1000), a range of ports (eg. 2000-3000), or a mix containing both (eg. 1000,2000-3000,4000).

5. Put a check in the Use the same port range for Internal port box.

6. You need to enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Internal IP Address box. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to.

7. When you are completely finished, click the Apply button at the top of the page to apply these changes.

Test If Your Ports Are Open
