Your Netgear Orbi RBR40 router protects your home network by limiting incoming connections from the internet. Sometimes it is necessary to unblock some of those connections like when you want to create a direct connection for gaming, use a specific application, or set up a new device on your network. This process is called forwarding or opening a port. In your Netgear Orbi RBR40 router you many need to open a port, which means assigning a port number or set of port numbers to a specific IP address. This routes the incoming data to the correct device on your network.
To open a port in your Netgear Orbi RBR40 router, follow these important steps:
- On the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to, you will need to set up a static IP address.
- Log in to your Netgear Orbi RBR40 router.
- Find the Port Forwarding section in your Netgear Orbi RBR40 router.
- Find the Advanced tab located near the top of the screen and click on it.
- Click on the Advanced Setup tab at the left of the screen.
- Click Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.
- Go ahead and create a Port Forwarding entry.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Login To Your Netgear Router
In order to login to the Netgear Orbi RBR40 router you need to use a web browser. The Netgear Orbi RBR40 router uses what is called a web interface where you can access and control router settings.
Go ahead and open up your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
If this step is confusing, we have simplified it for you with this link: Login to your Orbi RBR40 Router
Find the address bar once you have opened up a web browser. This is usually located at the top of the page, like in the image below.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The Netgear Orbi RBR40 router's default IP address is: 192.168.1.1
Enter your router's IP address into the address bar of your browser and click the enter button on your keyboard. A box like the one below should appear.
To login, enter the username and password for the Netgear Orbi RBR40s. Important Note: If you have changed them in the past, you need to enter in those values.
- The default Netgear Orbi RBR40 Router Username is: admin
- The default Netgear Orbi RBR40 Router Password is: password
Once you enter your username and password, click the Log In button.
Netgear Username and Password Trouble
If the username and password that you typed in did not work, check out our Default Netgear Router Passwords page for other ideas about possible passwords.
If, after trying the above list of passwords you still can't log in, you may need to reset your router. Learn how to do that by reading our How to Reset a Router guide. After resetting the Netgear Orbi RBR40 router your username and password are reverted back to factory defaults. Router settings may also change when you reset, so make a note of your current router settings before you reset.
Find the Port Forwarding Section
You should be on your routers home page once you complete logging in. Find the Port Forwarding section on the home page of the Netgear Orbi RBR40 router.
- Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the screen.
- Click the Advanced Setup tab at the left of the screen.
- Click on Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.
You are now on the Port Forwarding / Port Triggering page.
Create A Port Forward
Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

-
Make sure there's a dot in the Port Forwarding radio button, then click the button that says Add Custom Service.
-
Put a name for this forward in the Service Name box so that you can remember why you set this forward up. The name does not matter, so pick something that has meaning to you.
-
In the Protocol dropdown box, select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. Choose Both if your router has that option. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have the Both option, then you need to create two entries.
-
If you are forwarding a single port number, enter it into the External port range box. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the External port range box, followed by a hyphen followed by the largest number. For example, a range of port numbers might look like this: 1000-2000.
-
Put a check in the box named Use the same port range for Internal port.
-
You need to enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Internal IP address boxes. It's possible for this to be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to. Alternatively you can select it from the list of available devices.
-
To apply these changes, remember to click the Apply button at the top of the page when you are completely finished.
Test If Your Ports Are Open
Finally, I strongly recommend testing to see if you forwarded the Netgear Orbi RBR40 ports correctly. To do this you can use our Network Utilities tool, which includes a free Open Port Checker. Open Port Checker is the only online port checking tool that has Guaranteed Results.
