An important aspect of having a Netgear router on your home network is internet security. In general, routers block incoming internet connections and protect your network by only allowing the connections that you specifically set up. Sometimes it is necessary to unblock certain connections in your router or open a port in order to play a game or use an application. To help you get a better connection for gaming or using an application, you can open a port in your R6400v2 and allow a direct connection.
In order to open ports in your Netgear R6400v2 router, you need to:
- Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
- Login to your Netgear R6400v2 router.
- Navigate to the Port Forwarding section in your Netgear R6400v2 router.
- Find the Advanced tab at the top of the screen and click on it.
- Click the Advanced Setup tab, which is at the left of the screen.
- Click on Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.
- Go ahead and create a Port Forwarding entry.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Step 2
In order to login to the Netgear R6400v2 router you need to use a web browser. The Netgear R6400v2 router uses what is called a web interface where you can access and control router settings.
Go ahead and open up your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
If this step is confusing, we have simplified it for you with this link: Login to your R6400v2 Router
Find the address bar once you have opened up a web browser. This is usually located at the top of the page, like in the image below.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The default IP address for the Netgear R6400v2 router is: 192.168.1.1
Once you have entered your router's IP address in the address bar go ahead and click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box like the one shown below.
Enter the username and password for the Netgear R6400v2 in the corresponding boxes. Important Note: If you have changed them in the past, you need to enter in those values.
- The default Netgear R6400v2 Router Username is: admin
- The default Netgear R6400v2 Router Password is: password
To log in to your Netgear R6400v2 router, enter your username and password, and then click the Log In button.
Netgear Usernames and Passwords
If the username and password did not work I recommend checking out our Default Netgear Router Passwords page.
If, after trying the above list of passwords you still can't login you may need to consider a reset for your router. Learn how to do that by reading our How to Reset a Router guide. After resetting the Netgear R6400v2 router your username and password are reverted back to factory defaults.
Step 3
You should be on your routers home page once you complete logging in. Find the Port Forwarding section on the home page of the Netgear R6400v2 router.
- Find the Advanced tab at the top of the screen and click it.
- Find the Advanced Setup tab at the left of the screen and click on it.
- Click Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.
You should now be on a page called Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.
Step 4
Make sure that you must open a port in your router before doing so since this will allow data to come through the firewall portion of your router to a specific device. It is possible that this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. However, don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it because the risk is very low.

-
Make sure there's a dot next to Port Forwarding, then click on the button that says Add Custom Service.
-
Create a name for this forward and type it into the Service Name box. Since the name does not have an effect on the functionality of the forward, choose a name that will help you remember why the forward was created.
-
In the Protocol dropdown box, select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. Choose Both if your router has that option. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have the Both option, then you need to create two entries.
-
You can enter either a single number or a range of numbers in the External Port box. If you are forwarding a single port number, you can enter it into the External Port box. To forward a range of ports, you can enter the lowest number of that range into the External Port box, followed by a hyphen, followed by the largest number. An example would look like this: 1000-2000.
-
Put a check in the box named Use the same port range for Internal port.
-
Go ahead and enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Internal IP Address box. It is possible for this to be either the IP address of your computer or of any other device on your network that you want ports forwarded to.
-
Click the Apply button at the top of the page to apply these changes when you are completely finished.
