A SmartRG SR516ac router protects your home network by blocking unwanted incoming internet connections and acting as a basic firewall. Sometimes you need to open a port in your router in order to get a good connection for a game or to use a specific device on your network. The SR516ac lets you choose the applications that are allowed to connect through an open port. By opening a port in your router you allow a specific application or game to send data from the internet to your home network.

Follow these steps to open a port in your SmartRG SR516ac router:

  1. If you have more than one interface, select the interface this is for in the Use Interface drop-down list.

  2. Click on the radio button labeled Custom Service.

  3. Put a name for this forward in the Custom Service box so that you can remember why you set this forward up. The name does not matter, so pick something that has meaning to you.

  4. Find the Server IP Address box and enter the IP address that you want ports forwarded to. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address for devices on your network that you want to forward ports for.

  5. Select Enable from the Status drop-down box.

  6. If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into the External Port Start and the External Port End boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the External Port Start box. Then enter the highest number of that range into the External Port End box.

  7. Select the protocol type of the ports that you are forwarding from the Protocol dropdown box. If your router has the option of Both, then go ahead and select that. Otherwise, select either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP, but your router does not have Both, then you will need to create two entries.

  8. Enter the exact same values that you put in the External Port Start box, into the Internal Port Start box.

  9. Click the Apply/Save button at the bottom of the page when you are completely finished to apply these changes.
