Simple SmartRG SR804n Router Port Forwarding

A SmartRG SR804n router contains a basic firewall to help protect your home network. A Firewall blocks incoming connections by nature. Sometimes you need to unblock some of these connections so you can run a game or application. This is called opening a port or port forwarding. Port forwarding is literally forwarding a port from the internet to your home network.

To open a port in your SmartRG SR804n router, follow these important steps:

1. Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
2. Login to your SmartRG SR804n router.
3. Navigate to the Forwarding section in your SmartRG SR804n router.
   • Click the Advanced link at the top of the screen.
   • Click on the Forwarding tab, which is at the left of the screen.
4. Create a Forwarding entry.

The process of opening ports in your SmartRG SR804n router may seem daunting. Remember, however, that you are not alone and do not have to feel discouraged. Let us walk you through the steps for opening ports in your router. Let's get this figured out!

Setup A Static IP Address

In order to keep the ports in your router open, even after a reboot or disconnect, it is important to set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Login To Your SmartRG Router

The SmartRG SR804n router uses a web interface to display router settings. In order to login to the SmartRG SR804n router you need to use a web browser.

Open your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. If you are already in a browser window, go ahead and open up a new tab.

Find the address bar in your browser window. This is usually found at the top of the page, like in the image below.

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.

The SmartRG SR804n router's default IP address is: 192.168.0.1

Once you have finished entering your router's IP address into the address bar, click the enter button on your keyboard. A box similar to the one below should appear.

To login, enter the username and password for the SmartRG SR804ns. Important Note: If you have changed them in the past, you need to enter in those values.

Once you enter your username and password, click the Log In button.

If you are unable to log in even after trying the above list of passwords you may need to consider a reset for your router. Our guide How to Reset a Router can help you with that. After resetting the SmartRG SR804n router your username and password will be reverted back to factory defaults.

Find the Port Forwarding Section

After a successful login to the SmartRG SR804n router you should be on the home page of your router. Now you need to find the Forwarding section.

• Click on the Advanced link at the top of the screen.
• Click the Forwarding tab, which is at the left of the screen.

You should now be on a page called Forwarding.

Create A Port Forward

Forwarding ports in your router creates a path that allows data to get through your network firewall, and this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. So make sure that you must forward a port before actually doing so. However, the risk is very low, so do not let this warning stop you from making this change if you need to.

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

• TCP Ports: 3074
• UDP Ports: 3074

1. Click on the Create IPv4 button.

2. Go ahead and enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Local IP box. It is possible for this to be either the IP address of your computer or of any other device on your network that you want ports forwarded to.

3. To forward a single port, enter the port number into the Local Start Port and the Local End Port boxes. To forward a range of ports, enter the lowest number in the range into the Local Start Port box. Then enter the highest number in the range into the Local End Port box.

4. Leave the External IP box alone, you don't need to change anything there.

5. Take the values that you entered in the Local Start Port and Local End Port boxes and put the exact same numbers in the External Start Port and External End Port boxes.

6. Select the protocol type of the ports that you are forwarding from the Protocol dropdown box. If your router has the option of Both, then go ahead and select that. Otherwise, select either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP, but your router does not have Both, then you will need to create two entries.

7. In the Description box, type in a name for this forward. This will serve as a reminder to you in the future as to why this forward was set up, so give it a name that makes sense to you.

8. Make the On selection in the Enabled drop-down list.

9. Remember to click the Apply button at the bottom of the page to apply these changes when you are completely finished.
