A TP-Link TL-ER6120 router protects your home network by blocking unwanted incoming internet connections and acting as a basic firewall. Sometimes you need to open a port in your router in order to get a good connection for a game or to use a specific device on your network. The TL-ER6120 lets you choose the applications that are allowed to connect through an open port. By opening a port in your router you allow a specific application or game to send data from the internet to your home network.
The following steps will show you how to open ports on the TP-Link TL-ER6120 router:
- Go ahead and set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding these ports to.
- Go ahead and log in to your TP-Link TL-ER6120 router.
- In your TP-Link TL-ER6120 router, navigate to the Virtual Server section.
- Click the Advanced link, which is at the left of the screen.
- Click on the link called NAT.
- Find the Virtual Server tab at the top of the screen and click on it.
- Go ahead and create a Virtual Server entry.

Step 1 - Setup A Static IP Address
If you want to ensure that your ports remain open even after your device reboots, set up a static IP address in the device that you are opening a port for.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Step 2 - Login To Your TP-Link Router
Log in to your TP-Link TL-ER6120 router. To log in you will need to use a web browser since the TP-Link TL-ER6120 uses a web interface to access router configurations.
Open up whichever internet browser that you are comfortable with. If you are not sure which one to use, then go ahead and open Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Once you have opened a web browser, find the address bar which is usually located at the top of the screen. The image below shows an example of this.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The TP-Link TL-ER6120 router's default IP address is: 192.168.1.1
Enter your router's IP address into the address bar of your browser and click the enter button on your keyboard. A box like the one below should appear.
Go ahead and enter the username and password for the TP-Link TL-ER6120 router in the spaces available. Remember if you have changed them in the past, you need to enter those values.
- The default TP-Link TL-ER6120 Router Username is: admin
- The default TP-Link TL-ER6120 Router Password is: admin
Enter your username and password, and then click the Login button to log in to your TP-Link TL-ER6120 router.

Step 3 - Find The Port Forwarding Section
After successfully logging in to your TP-Link TL-ER6120 router you should see the router's home page on your screen. Find the Virtual Server section of your router.
- Find the Advanced link located near the left of the screen and click on it.
- Click on the link called NAT.
- Find the Virtual Server tab located near the top of the screen and click on it.
You should now be on a page that says Virtual Server.
Step 4 - Create A Port Forward Entry
Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
- TCP Ports: 3074
- UDP Ports: 3074

Create a name for this forward and type it into the Name box. Since the name does not have an effect on the functionality of the forward, choose a name that will help you remember why the forward was created.

Select your internet connection from the Interface drop-down box.

If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into the left External Port and the right External Port boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the left External Port box. Then enter the highest number of that range into the right External Port box.

Take the values that you entered in the left External Port box and put the exact same numbers in the left Internal Port box.

Enter the same values into the right Internal Port box that you entered into the right External Port box.

Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.

You need to enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Internal Server IP box. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to.

Click the Activate radio button.

To apply these changes, remember to click the Add button at the right of the page when you are completely finished.
Test If Your Ports Are Open
