Your VR2800 router helps to protect your network by blocking incoming internet connections. This is an important feature that helps you to control which applications have access to your network. Sometimes you want to allow network access to a specific application in order to play a game, connect a device, or use an app. The TP-Link VR2800 can unblock certain incoming connections through port forwarding or by opening a port. You can open ports in your VR2800 by assigning specific ports to an IP address. Forwarding these ports directs incoming data to a specific device or application.
To open a port in your TP-Link VR2800 router, follow these important steps:
- Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
- Go ahead and log in to your TP-Link VR2800 router.
- In your TP-Link VR2800 router, navigate to the Virtual Servers section.
- Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the screen.
- Find the Nat Forwarding tab located near the left of the screen and click it.
- Create a Virtual Servers entry.
The process of opening ports in your TP-Link VR2800 router may seem daunting. Remember, however, that you are not alone and do not have to feel discouraged. Let us walk you through the steps for opening ports in your router. Let's get this figured out!
We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.
When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!
Step 1
It is important to set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports remain forwarded even after a reboot, power outage, or another type of device or router disconnect.

Or follow our Static IP Address guides to setup a static IP address.
After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Step 2
Log in to the TP-Link VR2800 router. To do this you need to use a web browser because the TP-Link VR2800 router uses what is called a web interface.
It normally doesn't matter what web browser you use so go ahead and open up your favorite. If you don't have a favorite then open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
If that is confusing to you, we have simplified this step with this link: Login to your VR2800 Router
Once you have opened up a browser window, find the address bar. This is usually at the top of the page like the image below shows.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The TP-Link VR2800 router's default IP address is: 192.168.1.1
After typing your router's IP address into the address bar, make sure to click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box similar to the one shown below.
Enter the username and password for the TP-Link VR2800 in the corresponding boxes. Important Note: If you have changed them in the past, you need to enter in those values.
- The default TP-Link VR2800 Router Username is: admin
- The default TP-Link VR2800 Router Password is: admin
To log in to your TP-Link VR2800 router, enter your username and password, and then click the Login button.
TP-Link Usernames and Passwords
If the username or password did not work check out our Default TP-Link Router Passwords page.
If you are unable to log in even after trying the above list of passwords you may need to consider a reset for your router. Our guide How to Reset a Router can help you with that. After resetting the TP-Link VR2800 router your username and password will be reverted back to factory defaults.
Step 3
You should be on your routers home page once you complete logging in. Find the Virtual Servers section on the home page of the TP-Link VR2800 router.
- Click the Advanced tab, which is at the top of the screen.
- Find the Nat Forwarding tab at the left of the screen and click on it.
You are now on the Virtual Servers page.
Step 4
Forwarding ports in your router creates a path that allows data to get through your network firewall, and this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. So make sure that you must forward a port before actually doing so. However, the risk is very low, so do not let this warning stop you from making this change if you need to.
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
- TCP Ports: 3074
- UDP Ports: 3074
If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:
- Browsing our List of Games
- Check out our our List of Games by Genre
- See our List of all Applications

- Make up a name to put in the Service Type box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward; it's simply there so you can know why it was created.
- The External Port box accepts either a single number or a range of numbers. If you are forwarding a single port number, then enter that port number into the External Port box. If you are forwarding a range of ports such as 1000-2000, then you can enter the lowest number of that range into the External Port box, followed by a hyphen, followed by the largest number.
- Take the values that you entered in the External Port box and put the exact same numbers in the Internal Port box.
- You need to enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Internal IP box. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to.
- Select All from the Protocol drop-down box.
- Choose Enabled from the Status drop-down box.
- To apply these changes, remember to click the Save button at the left of the page when you are completely finished.
Test If Your Ports Are Open
Finally, I strongly recommend testing to see if you forwarded the TP-Link VR2800 ports correctly. To do this you can use our Network Utilities tool, which includes a free Open Port Checker. Open Port Checker is the only online port checking tool that has Guaranteed Results.
