Did you know your router, the Trendnet TEW-827DRU, has a firewall designed to help protect your home network from unwanted Internet access? This firewall does it's job quite well, blocking any connection to and from the Internet that it has deemed unsafe.
When you have a program or game that does not run smoothly it may be solved by opening some of these blocked connections. This process of opening a connection or port is frequently called a port forward.
In this guide we will be showing you step by step how to port forward on your Trendnet TEW-827DRU router. We will show you how to:
- Setup a static IP address on the device you want to forward ports to.
- Login to the Trendnet TEW-827DRU router.
- Navigate to the port forwarding section of the router settings.
- Create a port forward entry.
We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.
When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!
Step 1
It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.
- Recommended - Our free Static IP Setter will set up a static IP address for you.
- Another way to get a permanent IP address is to set up a DHCP reservation.
- Or, manually create a static ip address with our Static IP Guides.
This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.
Use a VPN Instead
Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
Step 2
This second step shows you how to login to the Trendnet TEW-827DRU router setup menu. Your router uses a web interface meaning to use it you need to open up a web browser. It doesn't matter which browser you decide to use, simply pick your favorite. Some of the common options right now are Chrome, Internet Explorer, Edge, and Firefox.
Once you have picked a web browser, open it up and find the address bar. Typically these can be found at the top of the page like this:
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.
The default Trendnet TEW-827DRU IP Address is: 192.168.10.1
After entering the router's IP address into the address bar, click the Enter key. It should take you to a page like this:
You are on the right page if you are asked for a User name and Password.
- The Default Trendnet TEW-827DRU Router Username is: admin
- The Default Trendnet TEW-827DRU Router Password is: password
If you have changed your router's username and password in the past then you need to enter those values instead.
Having Trouble?
The username and password is a common place to get stuck. If you find yourself here, there are a few things you can try.
- First, you can try other common Trendnet username/password combinations. If you have a different firmware version it is possible you could have a different username and password as well. Here is our list of Default Trendnet Router Passwords.
- If that did not work then you most likely changed the router's username and password in the past and don't remember what you changed it to. You can try to guess what you changed it to or you can use our Find Password App to automate the process. It guesses thousands of different combinations for you. Learn all about this on our page titled Router Password Cracker.
- Finally if you still cannot login to the Trendnet TEW-827DRU router you may need to start considering a factory reset. A reset like this one is a big step and should not be taken lightly. We strongly recommend exhausting other troubleshooting options first. Learn how to reset a router on this How to Reset a Router page.
Step 3
Once you have successfully logged into the Trendnet TEW-827DRU router interface you need to find the port forwarding section. To help you with this we begin on the Home page:
The first step to finding the port forward section is to click the tab at the top labeled ADVANCED.
You are now on the Advanced Home page. In the left sidebar, click the option of Firewall.
Clicking firewall opens up a sub-menu. In this menu you will be choosing either Virtual Server or Gaming.
The above image is the Virtual Server page. Choose this option in the left sidebar if you are only forwarding a single port.
The above image is the Gaming page. You should choose this option if you are forwarding multiple ports or ranges of ports.
Step 4
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
- TCP Ports: 3074
- UDP Ports: 3074
If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:
- Browsing our List of Games
- Check out our our List of Games by Genre
- See our List of all Applications

This router has two different sections that allow you to forward ports. One section allows you to forward a range of ports, and the other allows you to forward a single port. To forward a range of ports, click Gaming. To forward a single port, click Virtual Server.
Forwarding a Port Range
Enable the Rule Enable checkbox by putting a check in it.
Make up a name to put in the Rule Name box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward, it's simply there so you can know why it was created.
Enter the IP address that you want to forward these ports to into the IP Address box. Note that if you are forwarding ports so you can run a program on a device other than your computer then you can enter your device's IP address into that box instead.
These entries are protocol specific. If the ports you are forwarding need to be forwarded using the TCP protocol, you should enter those ports into the TCP section. If the ports you are forwarding need to be forwarded with the UDP protocol, you should enter those ports into the udp section.
Enter the ports to forward into the Ports To Open box.
The ports can be entered as a list 23,24,25, a range 500-600, or a combination of both 23,45,500-600.
In the Inbound Filter dropdown box pick Allow All.
Use the Schedule dropdown box to select Always.
Forwarding a Single Port
In the Rule Enable checkbox put a checkmark.
You need to name this entry in the Rule Name box. The name does not make any difference in the forward; it's just there so that you can remember later why you setup this forward.
Enter the IP address that you want to forward these ports to into the IP Address box. Note that if you are forwarding ports so you can run a program on a device other than your computer then you can enter your device's IP address into that box instead.
In the Protocol box select the protocol that you want to forward these ports over.
Enter the same port number to be forwarded into the Public Port and the Private Port boxes.
Pick Allow All from the Inbound Filter dropdown box.
From the Schedule dropdown box select Always.
Don't forget to click the Add button after each entry.
Test Your Forwarded Ports
When you have finished forwarding the ports, you should test them to see if they are really open. One way to do this is to use our Open Port Checker. It is part of our FREE trial version of the Network Utilities. Our Open Port Checker doesn't assume what applications you have on your computer, it uses a local application to listen for the ports. This way we can GUARANTEE whether or not your ports are open.
