This guide will show you how to open a port on the Virgin Media Super Hub 2 router.
Did you know your Virgin Media Super Hub 2 router comes with a basic firewall designed to help protect your home network against unwanted access from the Internet? A firewall does this by blocking all connections to and from the Internet unless told otherwise. You cannot access the Internet without some of these connections (ports) being opened. By default a certain group of ports are opened to allow you to use the Internet fairly safely.
What happens when you want to open some other ports so you can play a game or run an application more effectively? This is where a port forward comes into play. You are able to tell the router what ports to open and where that port is to go to. This is called a port forward.
The basic process to open a port is:
- Setup a static IP address on the computer or console you want these ports forwarded to.
- Login to your Virgin Media Super Hub 2 router.
- Find the port forwarding section.
- Click the Advanced Settings button.
- Click the Port Forwarding link.
- Create a port forward entry.
That may seem difficult at first, but don't worry, we will walk you through every step in the process to get your ports open.
We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.
When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!
Step 1
It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.
- Recommended - Our free Static IP Setter will set up a static IP address for you.
- Another way to get a permanent IP address is to set up a DHCP reservation.
- Or, manually create a static ip address with our Static IP Guides.
This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.
Use a VPN Instead
Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
Step 2
It is now time to login to the Virgin Media Super Hub 2 router. To do this you need to use a web browser because your router uses a web interface.
It doesn't matter what browser you use, simply pick your favorite. Some of the more common choices are Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Internet Explorer. It really doesn't matter what one you pick.
Go ahead and open up the web browser and find the address bar. This normally runs along the top of the page like this:
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.
The default Virgin Media Super Hub 2 IP Address is: 192.168.0.1 Once you have entered the router's IP Address press the Enter key on your keyboard. You should see a page similar to this:
You are on the right page if it is asking you for a username and/or password. The username and/or password can be found on the label on the back of your Super Hub under "Super Hub settings".
If you are unable to login to the Virgin Media Super Hub 2 router it is probably because you changed your username and password in the past and have forgotten. Before you consider a router reset we strongly recommend trying to figure out what your forgotten password was. Our Find Password App automates the process of trying different password combinations.
Step 3
It is time to start looking for the port forwarding page in the Virgin Media Super Hub 2 router. To do this let's start on the following page:
First, click the red Advanced Settings button in the lower right corner of the page.
Scroll down this page until you find the option of Port Forwarding. Select that link and you should see the next image,
Step 4
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
- TCP Ports: 3074
- UDP Ports: 3074
If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:
- Browsing our List of Games
- Check out our our List of Games by Genre
- See our List of all Applications
Don't forget to sign up for NordVPN's promo deal before it's gone.
You might notice that most of our site doesn't have ads on it. This is because we use partnerships with companies like NordVPN to keep the site running. Thank you for supporting us by using our referral links.
Create a name for this forward and put it in the Name box. The name is only used as a reminder and has no effect on the port forward.
If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into the Start Port and the End Port boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the Start Port box. Then enter the highest number of that range into the End Port box.
In the Protocol box select the protocol that you want to forward these ports over.
You need to enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to in the IP Address box. It's possible for this to be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to.
When you are done click the Add Rule button.
Don't forget to click the Add Rule button after each entry.
Test if Your Ports are Open
Testing the ports is a pretty important step in the port forwarding process that a lot of people skip over. In order to check to see if the ports opened properly we recommend using our free Open Port Checker in our Network Utilities. There are a lot of port checkers online but ours is the only one that has Guaranteed Results. Learn more about how our Open Port Checker works on our Open Port Check page.
